Week 3 Introduction to the concept of "new literacies"

Why "new literacies?" As discussed in class, we will use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to identify information, locate information, evaluate information, synthesize information, and communicate information. In the course of Curriculum Design and Development, we want to design learning activities that help us and students achieve desired learning outcomes. Therefore, knowing what ICTs to integrated in our curriculum to enhance learning outcomes is important.

There are 3 assignments for this learning module. Post them on your blog by noon, Oct.4.

Learning outcomes:

1.      Candidates will describe the differences between traditional literacy and new literacies.
2.      Candidates will practice “ new literacies.”

Learning Task #1 Theory in Practice
1.      Read the following articles and
·         Barone, D., & Wright, T.E. (2008, December). Literacy Instruction with digital and media technologies. Retrieved from Sept. 5, 2011, from http://www.readingrockets.org/article/29126/
·         Leu, D.J., Jr., Kinzer, C.K., Coiro, J., & Cammack, D.W. (2004). Toward a Theory of New Literacies Emerging From the Internet and Other Information and Communication Technologies. Retrieved Sept. 5, 2011, from http://www.readingonline.org/newliteracies/leu/

2.      Assignment#1 Write a brief summary of the above three articles (one paragraph) to demonstrate your understanding of the concept and the importance of new literacies.

Learning Task #2 Minds-on “New Literacies Definition and Components”
1.      Watch https://sites.google.com/site/drhuiyinhsu/presentations (1st slideshow)
2.      Assignment#2 and answer the following questions:
·         How can you change your instructional practices to include the use of technology and the Internet in the content-area curriculum?
·         What professional development and/or resources will they need in order to make these changes?
·         What ideas do you have for grouping students so they will have equal access to technology in the classroom?

Assignment#3 In week 2, you will explore two technology tools and explain how they can be used to enhance teaching and learning.
